Tshukudu, Why visit?

May 20, 2019

If you are looking to escape the buzzing city life, or simply need a change of scenery, then you should slip away to Tshukudu Bush Lodge. Nestled against a hillside and surrounded by the striking mountains of the Pilanesberg National Park, overlooking a waterhole and savannah plain, it’s the perfect base-camp at which to relax and from which you can explore the South African bush and see the Big Five. At Tshukudu Bush Lodge guests arrive as strangers and leave as family. And now in addition to spectacular service, luxury accommodation and awe-inspiring views, guests can look forward to experiencing the improvements and refurbishments at the lodge that has been touted as one of the best bush experiences in the country.

Tshukudu is carved into the side of a hill and overlooks the extinct volcano complex of the Pilanesberg. The volcano was formed millions of years ago and is a beauty in its own right. Scientists have always been intrigued by the area, as it is one of the world’s best examples of an Alkaline Ring Complex and has also resulted in one of the most mineral-rich underground veins in the country. When viewed from above, three rings of hills – or concentric ridges – border the landscape. Upon closer inspection, the hills yield spectacular rock faces and hundreds of small caves.

One of the main benefits of volcanic soil is its fertility. And, in contrast to the dry bush found throughout much of Africa, this area boasts thriving grass plains where you can witness herds of antelope grazing, and catch a glimpse of Africa’s Big Five. The common areas of the lodge include a fire pit, where a campfire is made every night. Here, guests can enjoy the romance of the African night, including its millions of stars and haunting animal calls. A dazzling rock pool that itself has been carved into the rock face (complete with wooden deck and sun loungers) is the ideal place to sit, take in the sun, and sip on an afternoon cocktail.

While most of Tshukudu’s guests prefer to take their meals in their bungalows, there is a separate dining hall, which is home to a magnificent wooden table that has its own story to tell. The table was a gift to Legacy Chairman Bart Dorrestein from the former president of the then Bophuthatswana, Lucas Mangope. If you’re after a pampering session you will be pleased to know that private spa treatments can be arranged in the privacy and comfort of your chalet or in the tranquil setting of the pool area.

Tshukudu is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway and couples will be able to focus on each other 100% as there is barely any cell phone reception and there are no TVs. If you do require a network connection to check on the children or wrap up urgent business, it can be arranged. Experience the beauty of Tshukudu here: lstyl.com/eR7E4j
