The Portswood

Jun 22, 2021

For over 20 years, Legacy Hotels and Resorts has operated some of the most iconic properties in the country and on the African continent as the trailblazers and disruptors in the hospitality and tourism industries, providing world-class accommodation with authentic African and unique local experiences.

For travellers on their way to Cape Town, there is no better spot to spend a few days and sample a slice of the city's rich history and cultural heritage than the centrally located 4-star Portswood Hotel.

Located within the V&A Waterfront precinct, the Portswood Hotel lobby is built around a 300-year old water well, which had been covered, and was re-discovered when the hotel was built in 1994. The well was preserved as part of Cape Town’s cultural history and is still a place where guests pause and reflect on their arrival at the hotel. The Portswood Hotel's in-house restaurant, Quarter Kitchen, was built around the holding cells which once held good conduct prisoners on their way to Robben Island. What is now a private boardroom at the far end of the restaurant used to be a chapel for the prisoners to ask for daily forgiveness. An original small prison window and a high arched ceiling can still be seen in this room, and the restaurant’s exposed brick walls give away the history of this building. This now cosy and quaint restaurant has been fully restored and renovated around these features to preserve this incredible heritage. When visiting the restaurant, be sure to read about the intriguing history its walls hold.

Metres away from the hotel is where you will discover all that is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. So many Cape Town adventures are right on your doorstep when staying at this hotel. Visit the Two Ocean Aquarium, where you can see animals from both oceanic sides of South Africa: the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. With a room full of glowing jellyfish, and fierce sharks swimming over your head in a tunnel, to a simplistically sweet "Nemo" tank, your experience will be singular.

While you are at the waterfront, you can view the breath-taking Cape Town landscape from up high when you ride on the Cape Town Wheel, or enjoy one of the boating excursions that embark from the harbour there, including sunset and sunrise rides, dolphin spotting rides, a day on a yacht, and so many more. The ferry to Robben Island is also right there, so one can start their experience of this historically iconic site by simply walking from the hotel.

Many hop-on, hop-off Cape Town tours also leave from the Waterfront, so one can enjoy exploring Cape Town, a visit to Table Mountain, or even further adventures that will begin just down the road from The Portswood Hotel. Most of Cape Town's world-renowned attractions are within close proximity to the hotel, such as the Camps Bay and Clifton beaches, the Castle of Cape Town, and the many museums, exhibitions and markets, of which are dotted across the city centre.

With 101 luxurious room, an onsite bar and lounge, an outdoor swimming pool and terrace, as well as unique and delicious Cape Malay dining, there is something so special and memorable about staying at the Portswood Hotel.
